Development and Implementation of a Zoning Management Plan for the PAP (2007 – 2009)
Project start and end date: 2007-2009
Funded by: USAID/Jordan Tourism Development Project (Phase I)
Project cost: JD 48223
The objective of this project is to protect the significance, values, and integrity of the Petra Archaeological Park (PAP) as defined in the UNESCO management plan and later the US National Park Service (NPS) Operation Plan. The introduction of a zoning scheme will lead to better management of the visitors and resources especially the protection of the archaeological heritage, biodiversity and fragile geology. Zoning will also delineate types of usage and economic development potential for each zone and, in coordination with the key stakeholders, will help to maximize the site’s potential as a destination and as a revenue generator while protecting the site values.
